Located in the centre of a region of hills and plateaus, not far from the Rocky Mountains, Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta, Canada.
Now a destination of choice for winter sports and ecotourism, the city relied heavily on its oil activities until 1980.
Famous for hosting the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, Calgary is a popular destination for both winter sports and ecotourism. The city also hosts famous festivals every year.
Located in the province of Alberta near the Rocky Mountains, Calgary is Canada's third largest city and one of the most populous regions in the country. It is also one of Canada's most prosperous cities because of its dependence on the oil industry: its first deposits were discovered in the early 20th century. The city's economy reached its peak in the early 1980s, before suffering the full blows of a government plan on national energy. This plan, which will disappear in the mid-1980s, will not allow an immediate return to prosperity.
Calgary is a winter sports destination because of its proximity to many nearby ski areas. Its climate lends itself well to this: enjoying a continental climate, the city has long, harsh winters that are opposed by short, hot summers. The organization of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary also had the effect of projecting the city onto the international tourist scene.
Calgary is also famous for its festivals, including the FunnyFest Calgary Comedy Festival and the Folk Music Festival, which attract large numbers of tourists from around the world. Calgary has many sights and monuments to see. Tourists will mainly visit places like the Calgary Tower, Olympic Place, Fort Calgary, the Calgary Municipal Building and the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium which opened in 1957.
They will be pleasantly surprised by a visit to the Royal Tirrell Museum of Paleontology, the Glenbow Museum and the Calgary Art Gallery. Parks such as Calgary Zoo, Calgary Botanical and Prehistoric Park, Fort Calgary Historic Park and Heritage Park (a 19th century Canadian village reconstruction) will also attract visitors.
Finally, during your vacation in Calgary, do not hesitate to immerse yourself in the city, a sine qua non condition to discover its cosmopolitanism and multiculturalism. Calgary is also a city that has preserved the ingredients of its past (hotel saloons and western bars) to integrate them into a modern and contemporary atmosphere. In addition to its mountains and ski resorts, Calgary is also famous for its museums and cultural sites: one of the best addresses is the Glenbow Museum, one of the largest museums in Western Canada. The city also covers the largest Chinese cultural center in North America. Music is central to Calgary's culture. During your stay in Calgary, you will be able to discover that the city is a mecca for country music in Canada. But for clubbing fans, the city also has many addresses: 17 avenue is one of the most popular nightclub districts. 12 Avenue is also famous for hosting popular Calgary youth and tourist clubs.
