The name of the country is not a coincidence. Freedom, which is at the origin of its name, is perfectly combined with Liberia. It refers first of all to the fact that the United States sent back its freed slaves during the 19th century. Second, Liberia was the first African country to gain independence in 1847. Finally, it was also the first African nation to elect a woman as its head in 2005 - Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. This tolerant and open country in West Africa, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone, has nevertheless experienced a long civil war. But today, in transition to democracy, Liberia has again become a secure destination that is gradually beginning to develop tourism by highlighting its rich heritage. Freedom of spirit is reflected, among other things, in the peaceful coexistence of several religions such as Christianity, Animism and Islam. Couples can still choose a polygamous lifestyle that is not prohibited. The fact that at the economic level, this State remains a real tax haven, invites foreigners to take an interest in it more. Even communication with the locals is easy; the official language there is English, vestige of its colonization, only a few tribes have kept their own dialects. You no longer have any reason not to venture there. What can we see and do in this country? The range is wide, starting with multiple seaside activities on endless white sandy beaches, breathtaking sunsets, sunbathing and relaxing in the shade of coconut trees. Then, for more demanding sportsmen, safaris, hikes and trekking are ideal options, combining exotic discovery and the natural environment. For shopping addicts, here you are in the mecca of picturesque little things: embroidered clothes, decorated bowls, wooden vases, sparkling jewellery, festive masks... in short, the embarrassment of choice. So, during your stay in Liberia do not miss their beautiful local crafts. The gourmands will be delighted by Liberian culinary specialities, the explosion of tastes and flavours is assured. To all this are added diverse landscapes, bays and lagoons with transparent waters, tropical forests, reserves, parks, green hills... And also a modern capital, cities of different sizes scattered here and there on the territory, typical villages filled with a sweet hospitality etc.. This is the country where time stops to enjoy all the beauty. Visit Liberia during the dry season between November and April. Avoid the period of heavy thunderstorms in May and October. The inadequacy of the road infrastructure is then even more obvious. If you venture inland alone in a 4x4 (car rental in Liberia is practiced without or with an experienced local driver), you may get stuck on the spot due to the lack of breakdown services. Moreover, Roberts International Airport, which is about 30 km from the capital, is not linked to it by any public transport, except for a few taxis (Buchanan-Yekepa). The country is known for its waterfalls of Kpatawee which offer a water show without equal. Towards Gbanga, the environment is divided into countless basins that will enchant everyone. Other natural pleasures are represented by beaches (like Buchanan), tropical reserves and mountains. Remember to visit the Nimba Mountains. If you have never seen rubber trees before, Liberia is the ideal place to get to know them, its vast plantations are highly appreciated abroad. The port capital located on Bushrod Island and Cape Mesurado has everything to please. University, administrative and economic center, it also counts several museums, cultural spaces, gardens and also beaches.

Art and culture in Liberia
Liberia's culture is a mixture of the customs and habits of many tribes, even though Western influences are increasingly visible. Crafts are rich, weaving and pottery are omnipresent and multicolored. Enrich yourself with typical embroidery and jewellery. During masquerades, the most common mask is called khran. Dance is a distinctive feature of each tribe: admire the movements and rhythms of the Krus, Bassas, Vais and Kpelles dances, which are often linked to beliefs, rituals and religion. These diverse and varied styles have been maintained over the centuries. Rice harvesting rituals are dedicated to ancestors in the form of offerings.

What to visit in Liberia
The capital Monrovia is the first destination not to be missed.
