Stoke is the result of the merger in 1910 of a series of five cities: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Fenton and Longton; which explains the narrow and elongated shape of the agglomeration (nearly 10 km from north to south).Stoke is in Great Britain the capital of the ceramics industry; terracotta has been worked in Burslem since the xive century; at the end of the xviiie, a great Burslem industrialist, Josiah Wedgwood, launched the manufacture of fine porcelains from Cornish kaolin. Stoke is known for its regular or luxury tea services but it also produces electrical insulation, drains, tiles, bricks and coarse pottery. A large part of the fine production is exported. Stoke also owns a large cable factory, a French-owned tyre factory and coal mines. The six cities, Stoke, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Fenton and Longton, remain different entities, each with its own identity, despite their reunion 50 years ago to form the Potteries.
