Hull is one of the largest cities in Yorkshire. It is a harbour built at the point where the Hull River joins the great Humber estuary. The official name of the city is Kingston-upon-Hull, but it is almost never used, even by official institutions. Kingston-upon-hull or Hull is part of the county of East riding of Yorkshire in England. Historical, cultural, and old commercial platform it also has the status of city. Hull is known for organising one of the most important fairgrounds in Europe. Hull is a city with a rather bad reputation in England. It has an image of a somewhat isolated port city, experiencing social problems, and of the second most destroyed city of the country after London by the bombardments of the Second World War. Yet it is a city rich in history and heritage. Founded in the Middle Ages, Hull has long been a great port open to northern Europe and the colonies. Defoe made it the port of departure for Robinson Crusoe and it was William Wilberforth's hometown that banned the Black slave trade in the British Empire. While the great English cities of the Middle Ages such as York and Canterbury faded into the industrial age in favour of new cities such as Leeds and Manchester, Hull is one of the few cities in the country that has always retained the same importance, from the Middle Ages to today. Hull distinguishes itself in England by its telephone booths. While they are red in the rest of the country, those in Hull are beige, because the city has always had its own independent telecom company. Until 2007, this company, Kingston Communications, was directly managed by City Council. Since then, the company has opened up to competition and has been renamed KCOM. The huge bridge that crosses the Humber in Hull was at the time of its construction (1981) the longest suspension bridge in the world, with more than 2 km long. Today it is the seventh. Each pier of the bridge is 155.5 metres high. Because of the wind, the apron can move up to 3 metres on its sides and Hull organises a large number of cultural events throughout the year. In 2017, the city was awarded the title of "UK City of Culture", this qualification being awarded every four years to a British city by copying a bit the principle of European capitals of culture. Events and festivals include the Freedom Festival in the summer, which brings together street arts, artistic performances and concerts, the Hull Fair, one of the country's largest fairgrounds, held in October, and the Jazz Festival and Hull Comedy Festival in November. The Horror Fest, dedicated to horror films, is held in October, as is the Humber Mouth, a literature festival. The Trinity Festival, which consists of a series of concerts in the Old Town, takes place in September.
