Coventry is a city in England located in the West Midlands, not far from Birmingham. The city has long been one of England's most important economic and industrial centres. It is for this reason that during the psychological war against England, the Nazi regime led one of the worst air raids suffered by the United Kingdom during the Second World War. In 1955, it was the first city to be awarded the Europe Prize. Coventry is well known for the legendary 11th century exploits of Lady Godiva, who, according to legend, rode naked on horseback through the city in protest against the high taxes levied on the CityFolk by her husband Leofric. Still according to legend, the inhabitants were ordered to look away when she passed, but a man, Peeping Tom, did not do so and became blind... A statue represents her, on horseback, in the city centre. The statue of Godiva is a clock where, every hour, Lady Godiva appears on her horse while being watched by Peeping Tom. Peeping Tom's bust at Hertford Street and overlooks Broadgate. Coventry is mainly known for its automotive industry. The first British car factory was founded in Coventry by Daimler. Its downtown is home to the Transportation Museum telling the story of the automobile. Its university, Coventry University, nestling in the heart of the city centre attracts several thousand students every year, many of them foreigners. The establishment was originally a College of Design and trained car designers. In 1992, the institution became Coventry University, and today many disciplines are taught there. Coventry was also one of the main centres of watchmaking during the 18th and 19th centuries. The city had three cathedrals. Sainte Mary, of which only a few remains remain, and Saint-Michel, a Gothic cathedral of which nothing remains. The third is the new Saint-Michel cathedral, built after the destruction of the old one by bombing. It is the seat of the bishopric of Coventry. Conventry's city centre is also home to numerous art galleries, including the renowned Herbet Art Gallery, the most emblematic and symbolic monument in the city, the Cathedral of Coventry, Saint Michael. The original church dating from the 14th century was destroyed by German bombardments during World War II, leaving only the outer walls and spire. The bell tower of Saint-Michel is the 3rd highest bell tower in England. The cathedral contains countless treasures and masterpieces. The renowned Coventry Transport Museum houses an impressive collection of cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and bicycles. Admission to the museum is free. Coventry has many bars, cafés and restaurants. You will also find a multitude of renowned theatres and Arts Centres in England offering performances throughout the year such as the Warwick Arts Centre located in the university. It includes an art gallery, a theatre, a cinema and a concert hall. It is the second largest arts centre in the UK, after the Barbican in London. One of the sights of the city to visit is the School Building. It was built in 1100, first it was a church, and since 1557 it was a classical school. Parma of the religious buildings it is necessary to highlight the Church of Saint John, built in 1344 to the order of the queen Isabella. In the 16th century, the church lost its religious role and served as a prison, where captured royalists had been detained. Bablake School is another medieval school that was opened in 1560. It is located next to Bond Hospital (Hill Street), the buildings are connected by an arch. If you pass through the arch, you will find yourself in a pretty inner courtyard that has not changed for hundreds of years. Walking in a park, you can see the door at Cook Street, which is adorned with bas-relief representing the symbol of the city - an elephant carrying a castle on its back. The Church of the Holy Trinity is another religious building, demolished not damaged by miracle during the war. The height of one of the peaks reaches 72 meters.
