Liechtenstein is the fourth smallest state in Europe. It is an independent principality, bordered to the north, south and west by Switzerland and to the east by Austria.

Its capital, Vaduz, is organised around two main streets, Städtle and Äulestrasse. It is an important cultural centre full of museums, such as the Liechtenstein Museum of Fine Arts, which presents works of modern and contemporary art, the National Museum, the Philately Museum (the most famous in the world), the Postal Museum and the Ski Museum, with a collection retracing 100 years of history of this sport. The town also houses the castle of the princely family dating from the 12th century, with its galleries of paintings and vineyards as well as an unobstructed view over Vaduz. Visitors can enter the princely cellars to taste or buy the wine of Crown Prince Aloïs. The famous "Löwen" hostel, built in 1380 and considered the oldest hostel in the country, is also a must.

To the south-east of the capital, at an altitude of 900 metres, lies the small romantic village of Triesenberg, offering one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. The visitor will be seduced by the dialect of this village which goes back to the Middle Ages. To the southwest, only three kilometres from the Swiss border, Triesen, Liechtenstein's third largest city, reveals itself to travellers. It houses numerous historic churches dating from the 15th century and a beautiful mill classified as a historic monument. Near Balzers, Gutenberg Castle, built in the 11th century, is also worth a visit.

For winter sports enthusiasts, you should visit the famous Malburn ski resort, very popular with tourists. The resort of Steg will be more suitable for tobogganers and cross-country skiers. The most courageous will not hesitate to devote themselves to the numerous hikes organized in the country, with more than 400 kms of paths which will make it possible to reach exceptional panoramas on the Alps and Tyrol.

Festivities
Many festivities, especially musical ones, take place in Liechtenstein every year. The beginning of the year is thus marked by the Opérettes de Vaduz and Balzers, a festival dedicated to the Opera held in January. In March, the Monster Concert also takes place in the city of Schaan. In summer, visitors can attend the Vaduz Film Festival in July or Liechtenstein's National Day on 15 August.
