A Middle Eastern state, Iraq shares borders with Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria to the west, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east and Kuwait to the south. The imposing gate of Bad al-Wastani and its tower recall ancient ramparts. All in brick, the Abbasid palace was the place of power of the dynasty of the same name from the 8th to the 13th century. The Madrasa al-Mustansiriya, remarkable for its size, is without doubt the oldest theological faculty in the world. The famous mausoleum of Suhrawardi will seduce by its muqarnas dome, typical architectural decoration. A stop is necessary in front of the caravanserai of Kan Mujan, two floors high, of which one will admire the vast interior court. Nearby, the National Museum of Iraq preserves Mesopotamian objects and Islamic antiquities from all over the country. Further on, stands the strange monument of the Victory Hands: two crossed swords in memory of the Iran-Iraq conflict.

South of Baghdad, Babylon once guided believers on the Processional Way, then about 800m long. Halfway up the road stood the gate of Ishtar on which is drawn the famous lion of Babylon. Further on, one can still see the ruins of the temple of Etermenanki before enjoying a view over the Euphrates bridge. The Museum of the Middle East proposes a partial reconstruction of the sacred way. The archaeological site of Babylon also allows to admire the remains of the palace of Nebuchadnezzar and a park located on the banks of the Euphrates.

A few kilometres away, Ur contains beautiful royal tombs and the Giparu, temple built for the wife of the sun king. Further southeast, Ctésiphon is known for the Sassanid palace Taq-e Kisra. Only the typical large porch and the south facade survived. To the north-east of Baghdad, Samarra is a high place of Chiit pilgrimage. Many ruins dating from the Abbasid dynasty, including the mosque of Al-Mutawakkil, have earned it a UNESCO classification.

Most Iraqi festivals are religious, such as the Sheep Festival in January or Ashura in February. On 9 April, Iraqis also celebrate the fall of Saddam Hussein. In October, the Baghdad International Film Festival also takes place.
