Vegan chocolate lets vegans indulge while staying true to their way of life. But why would anyone else choose a vegan chocolate box? Let’s look at where veganism comes from, what makes vegan chocolate unique, and ten reasons it is a luxury everyone can enjoy.

The short answer

Chocolate can be vegan: cocoa and cocoa butter are plant-based. A chocolate is vegan when it contains no milk, butter, cream, eggs, honey or any other animal ingredient — most often a dark chocolate of 70% cocoa or more.

zChocolat’s vegan collection — recipes by World Champion Chocolatier Pascal Caffet, made with 100% pure cocoa butter and natural ingredients — is handmade in France in a workshop that also handles milk and nuts, so traces may be present.

Veganism

A short introduction

What does vegan mean?

Veganism has its roots in vegetarianism, which dates back some 2,500 years to Pythagoras — a meat-free diet long called the “Pythagorean diet” — and to Eastern traditions that discouraged violence against animals.

Why do people become vegan?

The word “vegan” was coined in 1944 with the founding of The Vegan Society, which defines veganism as a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals — for food, clothing or any other purpose.

How is veganism different from vegetarianism?

A vegetarian diet excludes meat, poultry and seafood. A vegan diet goes further and also excludes eggs, dairy, honey and every other product of animal origin. Vegan chocolates are therefore suitable for vegetarians and vegans alike.

Ten reasons to love vegan chocolate

#1

A lighter indulgence

Vegan chocolate replaces milk with more cocoa, so it avoids the saturated fat of dairy and is richer in the minerals naturally found in cocoa, such as iron and magnesium.

Vegan chocolates with caramelized nuts

#2

It is the original chocolate

Is chocolate vegan? Yes and no: it depends on the recipe. The first chocolate, created in Mesoamerica thousands of years ago, was made from cacao alone; Europeans later added milk and sugar. Choosing vegan chocolate is a step back into history, to chocolate in its most traditional form.

#3

It is pure chocolate

Regular dark chocolate contains roughly 55% to 70% cocoa; milk chocolate, often 25% to 40%. The higher the cocoa content, the less room for milk — and the purer and more intense the chocolate.

Dark chocolates with almonds

#4

Fewer allergens

Without milk or eggs, vegan chocolate suits many people with a milk or egg allergy. Always check the label: zChocolat’s vegan recipes are made in a workshop that also handles milk and nuts.

#5

Dairy-free

White, milk and dark chocolate differ by their ratio of cocoa to milk and sugar. Vegan chocolate is either a dark chocolate with no milk at all, or a chocolate made with plant milk — soy, rice, oat — and therefore lactose-free.

Plant-based milks

#6

Often less sugar

Vegan dark chocolate is usually lower in sugar than mainstream chocolate. It is still an indulgence: enjoy it in moderation. For an occasional treat, our Vegan Alizé 0% Sugar truffles contain no added sugar.

#7

It brings happiness

Chocolate warms the heart and brings a smile — and cocoa-rich vegan chocolate offers the most intense taste of cocoa.

#8

Kinder to the planet

Livestock accounts for roughly a third of human-caused methane emissions (UNEP, 2021), and a 200 ml glass of dairy milk needs about 125 liters of water, against 6 for soy milk and 10 for oat milk (Poore & Nemecek, 2018). Choosing dairy-free chocolate reduces that footprint.

#9

Rich in minerals

With a high cocoa content, vegan dark chocolate is a natural source of minerals such as copper, iron, potassium and magnesium — as part of a balanced diet.

#10

The best chocolatiers make it

More and more chocolate houses now cater to vegan customers. Look for a vegan mention on the label, or simply ask: our team is always happy to answer your questions.
