Bordering the Timor Sea, Darwin is Australia's smallest capital city. It therefore has few inhabitants, among them a large Aboriginal community, immigrants from South Asian countries and one of the youngest populations in the country. Isolated in the Top End, this city sometimes takes on threatening gestures, it is here, in the far north of Australia, that one observes the greatest number of stormy lightnings on earth! It is also known for its salties, the famous marine crocodiles. Darwin enjoys a tropical climate with high temperatures and a wet season from November to April. Darwin's very small town centre owes its modern look to Cyclone Tracy, which destroyed everything in its wake on Christmas Eve in 1974. As you walk its streets, you will discover the Parliament, a beautiful building, and the ruins of Palmerston Town Hall. The Northern Territory Museum and Gallery, in addition to housing a vast collection of Aboriginal art, will take you back in time - before and after the Tracy disaster - and introduce you to Sweetheart, a giant crocodile that once sowed terror. Several sites provide a better understanding of the city's role in World War II and the 1942 Japanese bombings - including the Darwin Military Museum, the Aviation Heritage Centre and the WWII Oil Storage Tunnels. The waterfront of Darwin is a seaside arranged with restaurants, shops, hotels but especially lagoons, to finally bathe in all tranquility. The locals and tourists mingle for a picnic on the beach and a beautiful sunset on the sea, to the sound of didgeridoos. When you leave the centre of Darwin, you might as well say that you go on an adventure, such as Crocodile Dundee, but especially to discover breathtaking wild places. The city is surrounded by unexpected national parks. A few kilometres from the capital of the Northern Territory is Mary River National Park. The Litchfield National Park is a small tropical paradise where cascades and water holes follow one another, ideal to cool down under a blazing sun. Whether it's the Wangi Falls, the Tolmer Falls or the Florence Falls, they're all beautiful! You will also see impressive termite mounds and enjoy many hiking trails in the heart of the bush.Kakadu National Park, perhaps the best known, covers 20,000 km² east of Darwin. It is the largest park in Australia (at least on earth), which gives it an amazing diversity of landscapes, from its marshy plains to its rocky massifs.
