In Ngunanawal, the local Aboriginal language, "canberra" means gathering place. Located right in Bush, 280 km southwest of Sidney and 650 km northeast of Melbourne, Canberra was indeed chosen to put an end to the rivalry opposing these two largest cities of Australia and to become in their place, the capital. Born from agricultural land in the 1920s, Canberra is one of the few cities in the world to have been planned by a unique architect, Griffin. Today it is a modern, prosperous and relaxed city, home to the seat of the Australian Government, Parliament and the High Court. Canberra also has many museums, monuments and a national gallery that offer the opportunity to learn more about the country's political, cultural, military and sporting history. Canberra is a pretty city that is pleasant to walk or cycle through and is very airy. An example of green architecture, it is known for its lake and its many parks within and around the walls covered with native vegetation. An environment that earned him the nickname of "capital of the Bush".
