The second largest city in Victoria after Melbourne, Geelong occupies a strategic position on Corio Bay. A port and industrial city, it is the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula and the famous Great Ocean Road. 75 kilometers southwest of Melbourne by the Princess Highway is a former livestock center converted into an industrial and port city. With over 230,000 inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Victoria after Melbourne. Geelong is a very active city between Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. You can go shopping, stroll along the beach or discover its museums and old buildings. One hour from Melbourne and 20 minutes from the first surf beaches, the city of Le Grand Geelong is a must see. The waterfront (Eastern beach) was built and designed in its entirety in the 1930s. At that time, the city was looking to develop tourism and you will quickly understand why it quickly became the holiday resort of Melbourne's inhabitants. this is the best place in Geelong. It is a "swimming pool in the open air", free, built in the sea. There is a pool for children, several diving boards, buoys and even a place to do lengths. There is a large car park next door and free hot showers. For the globetrotter who lives in a van, it's a luxury. All along the beach of Geelong there are carved wooden figures, the famous Geelong bollards. They were sculpted in 1995 by Jan Mitchell (a local artist) and represent important figures in the city's history. For the visitor Geelong is often only a crossing point to the tourist sites of the Great Ocean Road, Torquay and its surf beaches, the Bellarine Peninsula and Werribee Park. However, the downtown area has some beautiful historic buildings listed by the National Trust. A museum is also worth a visit, the National Wool Museum. This one was arranged in one of the old warehouses of the city and traces the history of the wool production. The city also has interesting botanical gardens, pretty supervised beaches, and art galleries. The multinational Ford based in Geelong also offers visitors a dive into its history and prototypes...Geelong is close to the city of Torquay famous for its surf beaches on an international scale and the presence of famous manufacturers specialized in surf equipment and clothing (Quiksilver, Rip Curl...)
