Chula Vista is a municipality in San Diego County, California, USA. Its population was 173,556 in 2000. The territory of the present city, once inhabited by the Kumeyaay Amerindian tribe, entered the Spanish Rancho del Rey (King's Ranch) in 1795, which took the name Rancho de la Nación (Nation Ranch) in 1831 after Mexican independence.
