Gibraltar represents the rock-peninsula, the height of which is 426 m above sea level and it connects by the narrow isthmus of a length of 1.5 km with the Iberian peninsula. It received its name changed Arabic name Jabal Tariq, meaning "the mountain of Tariq", in honor of the chief of the tribe of Moors who took it in the sixth century. The city itself, as well as its harbour, is located on the western side of the rock.

Initially, again in 1713, Gibraltar was the British colony and only in 1967 according to the order of Queen Elizabeth II, received independence in self-government by the multitude of issues, except financial stability, foreign policy and security, as well as personal constitution. The subsequent development of events led to Britain and Gibraltar joining the EU, as a result of which it received special status. At this moment the population of Gibraltar makes about 29 thousand people, the quantity of inhabitants of Gibraltar makes about 20 thousand, who are the descendants of the natives of Spain, England, Malta and Genoa.

In the city still since the beginning of XIX century the personal production of alcoholic drinks has been regulated, that is why we can see here a great quantity of various bars and pubs. The main curiosity is the Rock itself and to see all its magnificence it is necessary to pass in a main street towards the Gates of the South to be found towards the funicular, from its cabin one opens the astonishing sight on the city itself.

Gibraltar is one of the most populous cities in the world, it is not enough catastrophically from the land and that is why some constructions are already erected on the water, as the example we can say what the runway of Gibraltar airport is made on the artificial embankment. Another peculiarity of this city is the immense quantity of wild monkeys, the destruction of which is punished by law, since these monkeys are officially under the protection of the country of the middle of 19 centuries. Gibraltar's culture reflects its diverse population. Gibraltarians come from different origins, English and Spanish and contribute to the singularity of the culture of this region which unites Northern and Southern Europe on the same territory. In addition to British and Hispanic influences, those of Genoa, Malta and Portugal are also present. The Christian religion was the foundation that united these different peoples. After the 19th century a Jewish community settled in Gibraltar, soon joined by a Hindu Indian community and Moroccans, bearers of Islam. This melting pot makes Gibraltar a unique place in the world, where many communities and religions live together and in harmony in a small space. Proof of this melting pot, the local dialect, Yanito, which mixes English, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew and Maltese ! On September 10, national holiday, the inhabitants celebrate the 1967 pro-British referendum. Gibraltar is not a nation but a British colony.

Culinar specialities
Gibraltar is not especially renowned for its gastronomy. British specialities are in the spotlight. Breakfast consists of eggs, sausages and beans in tomato sauce. In short, a full english breakfast that is taken in one of the many pubs of Gibraltar, which have nothing to envy those of London, pint of beer included! At noon, one of the best options is fish and chips. Late afternoon tea is an institution like in England, and if you like scones and apple pie, you will enjoy it. For a change, try the Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants: these are the most famous addresses of Le Rocher. Fast food is legion: pizzas and hamburgers hold the top spot. Unlike alcohol and cigarettes, prices are no match for those in Paris or London! Don't worry, though, if you look carefully, you will find paella and some tapas! And then, we are at the seaside all the same, you will often find fish and seafood in your plates!

Remembrance and crafts
Duty-free shops are taking over along Main Street. Alcohols, cigarettes, perfumes and hi-fi equipment are available at attractive prices. Also check out the Indian shops on Irish Town Street. And don't forget to stop by the Post Office on Main Street to pick up Gibraltar stamps. Shops are open weekdays from 9 am to 7:30 pm.
