Dominica is the highest and most mountainous island in the Caribbean, the Morne Diablotin culminating at 1447 meters high. Art and culture in Dominica
With its rugged and steep coasts, the Spanish did not insist so much on colonizing the island. A small settlement certainly settled, but it lived there in peace with the Arawak natives. Its name would come from the fact that Christopher Columbus discovered it on a Sunday (Dominica). Then English and French tore each other apart to possess it, to finally conclude that it would belong... to the Caribbean (people of Venezuela having colonized the islands in the 15th century)! French and British changed their minds, and succeeded each other in battle... The island regained its independence in 1978! English remains the official language but French Creole is equally used.

What to visit in Dominica
The capital, Roseau, its museum, its cathedral, its markets and its botanical garden will charm you. Going up, the villages of St Joseph or Massacre as well as the beach of Castaway are pleasant.
