The city of Wichita is located in the state of Kansas in the United States. This charming city counts 360 000 souls symbolizing the American melting pot. It's the largest city in Kansas and the seat of Sedgwick County. The major neighbouring cities are Denver in the West, Kansas City in the North East, Oklahoma City in the South and Tulsa in the South East. Founded in 1864, Wichita became a livestock center in 1872 with the arrival of the railroad, and the city's early growth went hand in hand with the expansion of agricultural productivity in the American central plains states. The period of the two world wars favoured its development: in 1917, the first Cessna plane leaves the factories of Wichita. In the 1940s, its population increased thanks to the jobs offered in aeronautics. Wichita is also home to six major aircraft manufacturers and the US Air Force base at Mc Connell, hence its nickname Air Capital. It also serves as the financial, transportation and distribution centre for the central Kansas region. The very essence of Wichita being the foundation of companies, it persevered in this direction and saw the birth of large companies with world fame like Boeing, Lear, Cessna, Coleman, White Castle, Pizza Hut. Wichita is a centre of the aviation industry and the Kansas Aviation Museum, which honours the memory of the air pioneers, has model aircraft. Today, Wichita reflects the impact of each of its evolutions throughout its history. The architectural heritage of the city still bears the traces.
