The city was founded in 1849 and incorporated the following year. The area, now known as Weber Point, is where Captain Charles Maria Weber built his first permanent residence in the San Joaquin Valley. He quickly developed the area during the gold rush to accommodate future gold seekers, and the city began to grow. Even today, Stockton and its neighbouring communities of Tracy and Manteca are experiencing a significant population boom. This is mainly due to the fact that thousands of people have decided to settle here in the area to escape the relatively high cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Stockton is 77 miles from San Francisco. Stockton is surrounded by generous farmland and has an award-winning wine appellation, Lodi. In all seasons, the city has farmers' markets and futures, and it is possible to have wine tastings in the surrounding cellars. Stockton also hosts dozens of multicultural festivals for the whole family all year round. It is particularly famous for its asparagus festival, the Stockton Asparagus Festival. Inaugurated thirty years ago, it takes place the last weekend of April. The Haggin Museum: This museum houses the finest collection of European art in the Central Valley, as well as numerous exhibitions on local history. Described by Sunset magazine as a little-known jewel of California, it brings together works by famous 19th century painters such as Albert Bierstadt, Rosa Bonheur and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, as well as many other American and European artists. Wat Dhammararam Cambodian Buddhist Temple: This Cambodian Buddhist temple houses more than 50 statues of impressive size, carved and painted by hand and decorated with jewelry. These colourful statues tell the story of Buddha and the Cambodian faith. The largest is a Buddha lying and is 15 meters long. Pixie Woods Children's Fairyland: A family-friendly amusement park for decades, Pixie Woods extends over 1.2 hectares and includes a merry-go-round, a pirate ship, a train and a paddle boat. Something to delight the little ones! The various themed play areas will keep children busy for hours. Wonderfully well maintained, the site creates a magical forest atmosphere.
