Laredo on the coast of Cantabria in Spain, between the estuary and the bay of Santona, is a popular tourist spot. This city attracts tourists who love cultural and historical sites as well as tourists looking for the pleasures that a seaside town can offer. On the side of the cliff, the old town with its walls and ramparts is very old since it would go back to the time of the Middle Ages, the whole has moreover been classified to the Historic Site. You will take pleasure to stroll in these old lanes dominated by high houses of which some date from the 16th to the 18th century and were inhabited by notables and bourgeois of the city. One of these alleys will lead you to the church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion of the 13th century which contains very beautiful rooms as two altarpieces a Spanish and a Flemish, the figurehead of the famous Santa Maria. This ancient part is distinguished by its squares, its fountains, its nooks and crannies, its massive doors and buttresses. It's also where you'll find the fishermen's houses that you wonder how they still stand! The new city or Enlargement welcomes shops, administrative centres, health services. Then in the third zone, between Charles V Square and the Epontille, the buildings are confined among some parks. Come and borrow the tunnel whose origin dates back to 1860. You will find it in the Menéndez Pelayo street, it will lead you above the beach to a belvedere from where you will have a panoramic view on the coast. The richness of Laredo is undoubtedly its very large beach of fine sand which spreads over more than 5 km, called the Salve, its dunes and its sea protected by two peninsulas. The amateurs of maritime pleasures will find several activities like sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, surfing... Moreover many maritime competitions such as regattas take place on this beach. And if you can ride a horse, don't deprive yourself of a gallop on the beach. There is a high concentration of bars in the old town where you can taste Spanish specialities: fish tapas over a good glass of wine. Come and taste the local fish specialities (tuna, sardines....) served in several restaurants in the city, some offer a panoramic view of the ocean. The Spanish being festive, you will always have the opportunity to have fun at local festivals or in nightclubs.
