Another city in Los Angeles County, Glendale is home to one of the largest Armenian communities in the United States, with a population of more than 190,000. There are families, young professionals who want to live not too far from Los Angeles but without paying the exorbitant rents. Tourists come to admire the final resting place of Michael Jackson or Walt Disney at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Quite residential, it is a huge suburb, separated in 2 by the Verdugo mountains. There are many small industrial areas, including car dealerships. Glendale extends at the end of the eastern part of the San Fernando Valley, is cut in two by the Verdugo Mountains. It is an important suburb within the Greater Los Angeles area. The city is bordered to the southwest by Atwater Village, a district of Los Angeles, to the west by Burbank, to the northwest by the Tujunga district and the city of La Cañada Flintridge and finally to the east by Pasadena. Glendale is the US headquarters of Nestlé, the Swiss multinational. Glendale was the first city in the world to host an Apple Store on May 19, 2001. Armenian families have been settled in the city since the 1920s, but the largest wave of immigration dates back to the 1970s. Armenians of origin are well integrated into the city, with many shops, several Armenian schools and dedicated cultural organizations. Glendale has the highest percentage of Armenians, most of whom arrived in the city during the last 20 years. The city is one of the largest Armenian settlements outside Armenia. According to the official 2000 census, about 65,000 Armenians live in Glendale (about 34 per cent of the population).
