Al-Hufuf or Hofuf (Arabic:) is the capital of the oasis of Al-Hassa, in the eastern province of Ach-Charqiya of Saudi Arabia, on the border of the Rub al-Khali desert. The city itself would have a population of 1.2 million, and is part of a large oasis populated by towns and villages of about 600,000 inhabitants. The oasis is located inland, southwest of Abqaiq and the Dhahran-Dammam-Al-Khobar region, south of the road to Harad. It would contain more than three million date palms, and would produce 500 000 tons of dates per year. It is the closest town to the Ghawar oil field, one of the largest in the country on dry land. Hufuf is an important cultural centre in Saudi Arabia. Many well-known families live there. One can see there the museum of Al-Hofuf, the Qasr Ibrahim, restored, around the mosque Al-Quba, of 1571, the souq Qaisariya, the camel market. The university campus of King Faisal University allows studies in the agri-food and veterinary fields. Women can pursue medical, dental, and home economics studies. Other fields of study are available at Dammam. It would be the burial place of the lovers Majnoun and Leila, the most popular couple of the Arab-Muslim world. According to legend, the Queen of Sheba also visited the city from her kingdom in Yemen.
