In southeastern Africa, Malawi is a narrow strip stuck between Tanzania in the northeast, Zambia in the northwest, and Mozambique surrounds it in the south, taking it in pliers. Extended along the Rift Valley, 20% of the territory is occupied (to the east) by Lake Malawi. From the high plateaus culminates the Sapitwa peak, rising to 3002 meters of altitude. The country is divided into three main regions, North Malawi, Central Malawi and South Malawi, the most populated region. The capital, in Central Malawi, is Lilongwe. The dry season begins in May and ends in October, and from November to April the rainy season takes place, during which temperatures are warm and the atmosphere very humid (especially in the Shire River valleys, on the shores of the lake, and around Lilongwe). The temperature is very cool at night, remember to add to your light clothing a small fleece and warm socks, the hat should not be useful (unless you climb the Sapitwa peak at night in winter...) We recommend May to November to visit the country. The country is inhabited by several tribes among which chewas (majority), nyanjas, yaos, or maravi. Dances, songs, costumes and masks differ according to the tribe. It is possible to go to a typical village to make contact with the population. This one is friendly and authentic. Tribal beliefs are tolerated by the dominant religions (Christianity and Islam), and traditional African doctors are still very successful. However, despite the art of African medicine, life expectancy is only around 50 years, the country being decimated by HIV and its complications, especially among young adults. Art and Culture in Malawi The Gule Wunkulu is a ritual performed by the Chewas of the north of the country, danced by the brotherhood Nyau, a secret society. One of the missions of this type of society is the initiation rites enabling young boys to enter adulthood. The costumes are both frightening and magnificent, the wooden masks impressive. Around Dezda and Mua are some examples of craft workshops dedicated to the making of pottery and wood carvings.
