A dream destination, Jamaica, with its heavenly beaches, green mountains and impressive waterfalls is one of the most attractive islands in the Caribbean. It is also a country with a strong cultural identity.

The third largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica belongs to the Greater Antilles quartet with Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. An independent state, it is characterized by dazzling white sandy beaches but also by lush vegetation, numerous rivers and waterfalls.

In Jamaica, all cities are located by the sea. The main ones are Kingston, the capital on the southeast coast, and Montego Bay, to the northwest. The colonial architecture and the Georgian style are very present there. Inside, the Blues Moutains mountain range culminates at an altitude of 2,300 m. Its steep slopes are covered with thick vegetation but also with plantations of one of the best coffees in the world and food crops.

In the Portland area to the northeast, the mysterious and changing waters, from azure blue to deep green, of the Blue Lagoon are fascinating. Although officially estimated at 60 m, the depth of this mythical lagoon remains unknown.

To the north, near Ocho Rios, the Dunns waterfalls, 183 m high, are impressive. You can reach their summit by climbing majestic limestone stones that draw a staircase. Rich Falls still in the Ocho Rios area and Ys falls in the centre are other of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country.

To the south, near Black River, is a large swampy area with the last large crocodiles on the island. While the country cockpit in the centre is full of hidden caves and underground rivers.

Socially, Jamaica is marked by an omnipresent religion. The country is known as having the highest number of churches per square kilometer. If Christianity is predominant, other religions, such as Islam and Judaism but also Rastafari, a local religious form, are also practiced. Jamaica is also known as the land of marijuana. It is an integral part of Jamaican society, even though its cultivation, sale and consumption are prohibited and reprimanded by law.

The weather in Jamaica is still nice and warm. To enjoy pleasant temperatures and a sunny sky, the ideal is to plan your trip to Jamaica between October and April. The hurricane season from July to September should be avoided.

Beyond its beautiful beaches, Jamaica is, in everyone's eyes, the home of reggae. Bob Marley is its spiritual father and imposed this music on the international scene. In Kingtson, his old house was transformed into a shrine to his memory. Reggae is more than music, omnipresent, it makes Jamaica's heart beat.

"Superstition is very high on the island, with Jamaicans believing in spirits (duppies). They use all kinds of stratagems to protect themselves, such as placing cross cutlery and a Bible near babies' bedsides to preserve their sleep.
