There are two seasons in Indonesia. The monsoon season and its humidity extend from November to April with heavy rains from December to March and temperatures above 30°C. The dry season is then the favourable period: between June and September, temperatures are mild and disturbances are rare. If you wish to avoid the crowds of tourists, the months of May, June and September will allow you to travel in the best conditions. With its 17,000 islands, Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world and is the 4th most populous country.

Yet only half of its islands are inhabited and there are still deserted or unexplored territories. Although the common language is Bahasa Indonesia, the population communicates through 742 different dialects. On its territory live more than 300 ethnic groups that are distinguished both by their culture and their religion. The main islands are Java, where the majority of the population lives, Sumatra, Borneo, Papua and Bali. The vast majority of the country is mountainous with over 500 volcanoes recorded, 128 of which are still active.

Some culminate at 4000 meters of altitude and the highest peak at more than 5000 meters. The fertility of the volcanic soils allows Indonesia to shelter one of the richest flora in the world. The tropical forest, 2nd in surface after that of Brazil, is present on two thirds of the archipelago and holds one tenth of the plant and animal diversity of the planet. Between the sea and the mountains, the reliefs are enchanting and the paradisiac beaches.

Art and culture in Indonesia
Indonesian art and crafts bear witness to the country's wealth. From sculpture to painting to performing arts, music and dance, each region has its own particularity. You will also find pottery, jewellery and objects useful for everyday life. One of the particularities of the archipelago is in the art of decorating fabrics: among the three known trends in Indonesia, the Batik is the best known. The fabric is dyed using ancestral techniques using hot wax to trace the patterns. From floral art to Japanese cherry trees and calligraphy, each batik is unique. You will find it in the form of furnishing fabrics, stoles but also cotton or silk clothing.

What to visit in Indonesia
With its 100 volcanoes, lush landscapes and architectural splendours, Java is a must. Sportsmen will enjoy the hiking routes accessible to all and will marvel at the beauty of the Merapi or Semeru mountains, whose summit culminates at 3676m. The Gede Pangrango National Park, the oldest in Indonesia, is declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and includes one of the most beautiful forests in the archipelago.
