Surrey is a city in British Columbia, Canada. After Vancouver, Surrey is the most populated of the 21 municipalities in the Greater Vancouver area. Surrey is bordered to the north by the Fraser River, to the west by the city of the Northern Delta, to the east by the city of Langley and to the south by the city of White Rock, Boundary Bay and the Canadian-American border (Washington State). The city consists of six main "city centres": Fleetwood, Whalley/City Centre, Guildford, Newton, Cloverdale and South Surrey. European settlers founded the municipality of Surrey in 1879, referring to the county of Surrey in England. First the agricultural city, then the industrial, Surrey developed in the second half of the 20th century, organized around six large districts (city center) today. Surrey's economy was dominated by manufacturing, agriculture, wholesale and trade, and was originally connected to New Westminster (and therefore Vancouver) by a bridge built in 1904 over the Fraser River, completed in 1937 by the Pattullo Bridge. In the end, the first of the Port Mann bridges to link Coquitlam was opened in 1964 and replaced in 2012 by a larger bridge. In 2016, the space is mainly served by express lanes 1, 1A, 15, 17 and 99, as well as by SkyTrain Expo (with four stops in North Surrey) and various bus lines operated by TransLin.
