Regina, the capital of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, is an important agricultural trading centre. It is home to Saskatchewan Wheatpool, the largest co-op in the world. The mounted police appeared in Regina. The city's origins date back to 1857, when Colonel Palliser settled on the banks of the Wascana River. The settlers named the place Pile o Bones because of the buffalo bones found there. In 1881, the region was populated thanks to a law in favour of the pioneers. The latter then have the possibility to take possession of 160 Ha of land, against 10$. The city was officially founded in 1882. One year later, it became the capital of the Northwest Territories and the headquarters of Canada's Mounted Police. In 1885, Louis Riel, leader of the Métis dissent was executed by hanging. After the construction of a transcontinental railway in 1886, the city expanded. Between 1905 and 1906, Saskatchewan had provincial status, and Regina was its capital. In 1912, the town was badly damaged by a tornado. In 1935, a riot occurred after clashes between the police and the unemployed during demonstrations. Since 1945, Regina's population has increased tenfold in the last fifty years of the 20th century, thanks in part to European immigration. There are many museums to visit, such as the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Plains Historical Museum (which traces the lives of pioneers) and the Parliament Buildings. The Anglican churches of St. Luke and St. Mary, as well as St. Paul's Cathedral, are also open to the public, so fill up on local specialties and bring back wild rice, mushrooms, lentils, red fruit jams and jellies, maple syrup and red fruit champagne for a taste of Canada.
