Alexander Keith's original 1820 brewery welcomes visitors with costumed entertainers, stories and, of course, an excellent "ale". Then walk (don't take your car!) from Keith Brewery to the waterfront promenade of the second largest ice-free harbour in the world. Take the ferry across the harbour to Dartmouth's waterfront, where locally owned cafes, restaurants and bars abound. The story is as dense as the fog in the Halifax metropolitan area, and the area has long been a favourite port of call. The Mi'kmaq spent their summers hunting and fishing in the area, and after the town was founded in 1749, sailors frequented the turbulent taverns called grog shops. Halifax has been a key player in many armed conflicts, including the War of 1812. These conflicts had repercussions during the First World War, when a French munitions ship exploded after colliding with a Belgian relief ship. The Halifax explosion would be the largest man-made explosion before the nuclear bomb explosion, killing 2,000 people and injuring 9,000 others. The Black Cultural Centre in nearby Cherry Brook tells the stories of Nova Scotia's Black communities and celebrates their history and culture. The Halifax Citadel is the massive star-shaped fortress carved into the huge hill in the middle of the city. You can't miss it!
