The capital of Peel County in 1867, it was incorporated as a city in 1873, then as a city 100 years later, when the Regional Municipality of Peel was created. Brampton was born in 1834 when John Elliot split the area into lots and gave the area his name. Incorporated in a village in 1853, Brampton is mainly an agricultural zone. Its small agricultural fair since its inception has grown into the modern Brampton Fall Fair. In 1863, Edward Dale established his first flower nursery in Brampton, this would become a landmark in the city and lead to Brampton being known as the city flower of Canada . At its peak the company operated 140 greenhouses, and was the largest cut flower business in North America. This heritage is celebrated today in the Brampton Flower Festival. Throughout the 1970s Brampton grew up encompassing several townships around it which today form the City of Brampton and the city became part of the Peel Region. The 1980s brought growth through residential development, from which the city continued to grow until today.
