Art and culture in the British Virgin Islands
Discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, the islands were ignored by the Spanish. They were then occupied by the Caribs, Venezuelan people, who had just driven out the Arawak Indians. In the middle of the 17th century the Dutch settlers arrived. Then came the British, who brought slaves from Africa to work in sugar and cotton plantations. Pirates of various origins hid in the islands, it is even said that Blackbeard had established his landmark on Soper's Hole.
