The archipelago of the Tonga Islands, or kingdom of Tonga forms a Polynesian state, located in the Pacific Ocean. Composed of more than 170 islands, they can be divided into three groups: the Vava'u islands in the north, the Ha'apai islands in the centre and the Tongatapu islands in the south. The capital of Tonga is Nuku'alofa or "the land of love", located north of Tongatapu Island on the Pacific coast. It is the main port but also the administrative, economic and tourist centre of the country. In terms of architecture, the city is a clever mix between modern and colonial architecture. Here you can visit the Royal Palace, in Victorian style, built in 1867; the Pangao Si'i public garden; the royal tombs of Mala'ekula, the Basilica of St Anthony of Padua, St Mary's Cathedral, or the business district. Also remember to visit the Centenary Chapel and the Talamahu Market. The ancient capital, Mu'a, to the east of the island, is worth a visit for its royal tombs and stone pyramids: they contain sculptures of ancient kings such as Ulukimata I. Not to be missed in the east, the visit of the bat dormitory or the famous double trunk palm tree. Those who are passionate about underwater life will not hesitate to go offshore to watch whales or dive to admire the magnificent coral reefs. The island of Tofua also deserves a stopover for its many volcanoes still active but also for its large central lake. The archipelago has several underwater volcanoes causing aquatic eruptions that will capture the attention of lovers of natural phenomena. Finally, for the amateurs of idleness appointment on the small island of Eua, and in particular on Tufuvai, interminable fine sand beach.
