Hail is a city in Saudi Arabia, located in the province of Haïl (north of the Nejd region). The city, which currently has more than 300 000 inhabitants, was once the capital of a powerful emirate controlled by the Al Rachid family, rival of Al Saud, until the creation by the latter of the current Saudi kingdom. The area is known for its rock art remains: This serial property consists of two desert landscape sites: the Jebel Umm Sinman in Jubbah and the Jebels al-Manjor and Raat in Shuwaymis. The Umm Sinman range of hills overlooks a fresh water lake, now extinct, which provided water for people and animals in the southern part of the great Nefoud desert. The ancestors of today's Arab populations have left traces of their presence on numerous petroglyph panels and inscriptions. The djebels al-Manjor and Raat form the rocky escarpments of a wadi now ensablé presenting a large number of human and animal representations which cover nearly 10 000 years of human history.
