Because of its geopolitical position, Lebanon has always been at the crossroads of three continents and the obligatory passage between the West and the Arab world, benefiting in addition from access to Central Asia and Russia. As a result, it was invaded and conquered many times: by the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans and the Ottomans. All these peoples have left a strong architectural, cultural and religious imprint. The capital, Beirut, deserves a stay, even if there are few monuments left standing after 17 years of war. It is a lively and bustling city, ideal for night owls. To see: the rebuilt centre, the National Museum, the Sursock Museum, in a 19th century villa and the natural site of the rocks of the Pigeon with its cliffs that plunge steeply into the face of the arch-shaped rocks that dominate the open sea. 18 kilometres north of the capital are the Jeita Caves, an amazing natural site with two huge cavities several kilometres long decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. The lower cave is crossed by a river and can be visited by canoe. Then, don't miss Byblos, built on a sandstone cliff, 40 km north of Beirut. This place has been inhabited since Neolithic times: the buildings attest to the different periods. One can see there Persian fortifications, the Roman way, Byzantine churches, the crossed citadel, the medieval and Ottoman city. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the historic city of Tyre in southern Lebanon, which has two archaeological sites, one on a promontory and the other inland. On the way, stop in Saida to visit its souk installed in the old historical centre and the citadel on the port. Another World Heritage site: Anjar, an 8th century Umayyad city in the Bekaa plain. This former commercial crossroads was abandoned a few years after its construction and has thus retained all its authenticity. It is surrounded by a thick wall and has two aisles decorated with colonnades. You can see the Baths, a richly decorated Petit Palais, the ruins of the Mosque and the Grand Palais. Nearby is the famous Baalbek. Its colossal buildings make it one of the most imposing sites of imperial Roman architecture, with the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter, Bacchus and Venus.

Do not miss the Qadisha Valley, north of the Mount Lebanon range, where the first Christian monasteries (Saint-Antoine, Notre-Dame de Hauqqa, Qannubin and Mar Lichaa) cling to the rocky cliffs are located. Not far from there are the remains of Lebanon's great cedar forest on Mount Makmel. If you have some time left, take a walk through the mountainous region of Chouf, walk through the stone village of Deir-el-Qamar (17th century), a listed historical monument and the Beiteddine Palace. In the south of the country many explosive devices constitute a serious danger, especially in rural areas. As in most Muslim places of worship, it is forbidden to enter mosques open to tourists barefoot. In all religious buildings, wear clothing covering your arms and legs.

Art and culture in Lebanon
The Beiteddine festival is important in Lebanon. It takes place every year in July and August, and hosts opera, rock and jazz performances in the Palais. But the most famous and spectacular is the Baalbeck Festival, held since 1956 at the foot of the columns of the Temple of Jupiter and Bacchus in July. On stage, piano, jazz, singing and ballet recitals take place in a majestic setting.
