Albury is located at the foot of the Australian Alps at 164 m altitude. It is on the Hume Highway, on the north bank of the Murray River, 550 km from Sydney, the state capital and only 310 km from Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria. The Murray River separates it from its twin town Wodonga in the neighbouring state. Together, they form an agglomeration of over 100,000 inhabitants. There are few traces and information on the first occupants of the city. However, the area had been occupied for thousands of years by the Wiradjuri aborigines. English explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell arrived in Albury on November 16, 1824. In 1844, the first ferry was put into service to cross the river. In 1851, after the separation of the region into two states, the city became a border town and developed through its customs post. In 1860 the first bridge over the Murray River was built. German exiles settled at the time in the region and began to develop the cultivation of vines and cereals and developed a downstream industry: dairies, wine cellars, flour mills, breweries.
