What is Administrative Professionals' Day?
The National Secretaries Association, founded in 1942, was created to recognize the contributions of administrative staff, support their personal development and help attract workers to the administrative sector.
Created in 1951, the Secretaries' Day was intended to promote this function. Indeed, the job of secretary or assistant suffered from a negative stereotype. The film analysis of this time confirms this connotation, for example the film "Monkey Business" which shows a secretary (Marilyn Monroe) who is not very intelligent and does not know how to type correctly! The United States therefore suffered from a shortage in this predominantly female profession. The Secretaries Association later crossed over from Europe to the USA with companies such as Ford and Apple. In 1951 Mary Barrett, president of the National Secretaries Association of the United States, and C. King Woodbridge, president of Dictaphone Corporation, were then members of a special committee charged with finding solutions to the situation of national shortage of qualified office personnel which was prevailing at that time.
With the help of specialist Harry Klemfuss, from a major public relations firm (Young & Rubicam), the idea was launched to develop an awareness campaign concerning Secretaries' Week. The 1st Secretaries' Week was held from 1 to 7 June 1952, marking an important turning point in the history of this sector.
The official period of celebration was first proclaimed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles W. Sawyer as "National Secretaries' Week", June 1-7, 1952, with Wednesday 4th June being designated National Secretaries' Day. It was sponsored by the National Association of Secretaries with the support of business groups.
In 1955, the date for celebration of National Secretaries' Week changed to the last full week in April, the Wednesday of which is now designated Administration Professionals' Day. The name was changed from Professional Secretaries' Week to Administration Professionals' Week in the year2000 to encompass the growing responsibilities and varied job roles of administrative support staff in the modern economy.
The one week observance was created to space reservations in restaurants, country clubs and other places where administration professionals would be taken for lunch.
When is the administrative professional day in 2018?
The next administrative professional day will take place on Wednesday 25 April 2018.
